Dear {{{first}}},
The month of July marks my 1-year anniversary at Kyalami Country Club. I thought it best to discuss feedback of my experience during the year, addressing the positives and negatives that I experience daily.
THE GOOD
1. The Membership is great at Kyalami Country Club. I can best describe the members as being Loyal. In the year that I have been here the positive interactions far outweigh the negative ones. Thank you for making me part of the Club. The membership numbers are increasing steadily which is a testament of the hard work going on at the club.
2. The NPC Board. It is extremely unique to have so much golf business experience on a board, we are all very lucky to have a dedicated Board and I can report back to you by saying that we all share the same vision of transforming Kyalami to reach the potential it has.
3. We are blessed to have dedicated and committed staff members. Most often when a new GM takes over there will be a big staff turnover. I am happy to report that only one employee was dismissed. Four employees left the club to peruse better opportunities. We continue to do staff training to deliver the service that our club deserves. Our staff are happy and we are a good team.
4. Our golf course is a well-designed classic. Golf Data continue to maintain our course to a high level, working within the budget that is given to them. Smaller protects on the go are building cart paths and levelling of tees. Although the rankings reflect that we went from number 21 to number 26, the explanation is more detailed. The real feedback that matters comes from you, our members.
The easiest way for me to explain our ranking is to say that our course remained the same as in 2022. The clubs that do not improve will be overtaken by clubs that are able improve.
•Our overall points received were the same as in the 2022 rankings.
•5 other courses did go ahead of us:
The Club at Steyn City (17th), ranked 23rd in 2022
Zimbali (19th), ranked 24th in 2022
Pezula (20th), ranked 22nd in 2022
CCJ Woodmead (22nd) ranked 25th in 2022
Erinvale (25th) ranked 27th in 2022
Financially, we can not compete against the clubs that went past us.
5. The addition of Padel Vibe to the club has brought in a different customer. It is still very early, however there are so many positive things to say about Padel. Most notably, the “family vibe”
6. Our club is busy. Just short of 50 000 rounds of golf being played in 2022. We offer great value for money both in golf, and F&B. The menu and the food quality is steadily improving and we look forward to introduce a new summer menu to you.
THE DRAWBACKS
We spent too little time in the past talking about the future, and therefore found ourselves in a predicament in 2020, with severe cash liabilities, obsolete golf course machinery and an ineffective maintenance & financial plan. Our management was precarious and required a significant turnaround, with strict controls and diligent processes. Below we have highlighted some key focal points of priorities.
1. Cash availability, we are currently running as low as ever, due to the liabilities catching up, but look forward to season to generate new cash, with new ideas and initiatives. However, we have managed to decrease our liabilities by:
2. Liabilities and Loans: Year ending
2020 – R8.5 Million
2022 – R5.7 Million
3. Maintenance and upgrades of the facilities continue slowly when cashflow allows.
4. Purchasing of much needed equipment is not possible due to cashflow concerns.
•From 2020 - 2022, R3.2 Million was spent on improvements and upgrades. These expenses were necessary for the club to operate as we do today.
•We are currently spending R280 000 each month on loans and liabilities. This has a huge effect on our cashflow.
5. To improve the golf course conditioning, automation of the irrigation system is a requirement. This is simply not a project that we have capital for currently and will have to be postponed.
6. Irrigation Water – Our storage capacity is restricted due to the amount of silt in our dams. This is an expensive project that we will have to address in the near future.
7. Loadshedding – We are currently spending R90k each month on fuel for the generator.
8. Solar – This is a capital investment with minimal ROI and cannot justify the immediate expense to alleviate the basic requirements.
To summarize:
There are so many elements to be proud of at the club, however the rate at which we can improve is restricted. The club is moving forward. Financially it is fast, visually it is slower. Multiple challenges lay ahead of us. I do not see problems, I see opportunities to find solutions. The future of the club involves YOU, our dedication and the community. We have come a long way, and certainly enabled prosperity for KCC for years to come.
