If you've been at the club this week you will have noticed the fairways being cut down in preparation for the growing season. Warmer temperatures have arrived and this is a total process to ensure the longevity of the fairways through Summer.
Our other bug bear through Winter is undoubtedly the bunkers. Bunkers in Winter are incredibly difficult to maintain as everything dries out and the sand becomes powdery resulting in horrible 'fried egg' lies and inconsistent sand depths from one bunker to the next, in some cases within the same bunker. Unfortunately over the years the sand in our bunkers has been ground down to a very fine particle size and as a result we feel the effects of the dry season more than some other courses. There is a long term plan to address the issue but bunker work is traditionally long winded and very expensive. In the interim new tines have been installed on the bunker rake to get deeper into the sand when raking and bunkers will be assessed for sand quantity, where they're found to be 'too full', this sand will be relocated to bunkers that have lost their coverage over the years. It's an arduous process and we thank you our loyal members for your understanding and patience whilst we address the issue.
The news hit social media this morning but for those of us not in the metaverse we are delighted to announce our Kyalami Festival. This will be a 5 day jamboree of golf, might golf, quiz night and for the energetic amongst a night run around the golf course as well as the introduction of a NEW event, The Member Member tournament.
A Member Member tournament is a great way to build camaraderie and our inaugural event on the 16th of September may signal the start of something special for the members of Kyalami going forward.
More detail and entry info will be communicated in a dedicated mailer so watch those inboxes.
Last year we hosted the Four Nations Cup, the innagural event between 4 PGA's across the globe. This year the host country is Australia and our very own Greg Bentley will making the trip across the pond to represent South Africa, Greg's selection follows an incredible year on the short stuff which included winning the PGA Regional Championship at Kyalami! An excellent year of consistently being in the running in every tournament he entered has earned Greg his all expenses paid trip to wear the Green and Gold in Australia.
We wish Greg all the best on his bid to bring the trophy home.
